Professor Dr. Emeritus Bernard P. Zeigler

University of Arizona,

United States

Professor Dr. Bernard P. Zeigler is Chief Scientist for RTSync Corp., and Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He is internationally known for his 1976 foundational text Theory of Modelling and Simulation, revised for a second edition (Academic Press, 2000). He has published numerous books and research articles on the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and of the Society for Modelling and Simulation, International (SCS). He was inducted into the SCS Modelling and Simulation Hall of Fame in 2009.

Zeigler is a co-Director of the Arizona Centre for Integrative Modelling and Simulation (ACIMS). RTSync is a spinoff of ACIMS devoted to transferring DEVS-based technology to general use. His latest book, "Guide to Modelling and Simulation for Systems of Systems" offers a step-by-step introduction to RTSync's new DEVS-based integrated development environment, MS4 Me. He is also on the staff of the C4I Centre of George Mason University.

Zeigler, having published several books on modelling and simulation, is best known for his theoretical work concerning modelling and simulation performed according to general systems theory. Moreover, Zeigler has played a critical role within the modelling and simulation field through his editorial responsibilities and professional activities that focus on the importance of modelling and simulation in its interaction with other disciplines (e.g., artificial intelligence, biological systems, and defence systems architecture). Zeigler has received much recognition for his various scholarly publications, achievements, and professional service. His 1984 book, Multifaceted Modelling and Discrete Event Simulation, was published by Academic Press and received the outstanding Publication Award in 1988 from The Institute of Management Sciences (TIMS) College on Simulation. Zeigler is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as well as The Society for Modelling and Simulation International (SCS) which he served as President (2002-2004). He is a member of the SCS Hall of Fame. In 2013 he received the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences (INFORMS) Simulation Society Distinguished Service Award.
